When it comes to hiring Engineering, Manufacturing & Production talent, you might be surprised to know that they have most of the power.
Let me explain…
Economic recovery is on-going and unemployment rates are declining resulting in fewer candidates for open positions within the sector, notwithstanding Brexit that may shrink the talent pool further. Hiring Managers are having to work really hard to fill their jobs. This is unlikely to improve anytime soon, and with the upcoming retirement of the baby boomer generation, the workforce will become smaller still.
In addition, increasing scarcity of good Engineering, Manufacturing & Production talent means that the best candidates have options. This means that they’re not likely to participate in a hiring process that doesn’t value their effort and time.
An Engineering professional recently shared an experience with me where he had been asked to interview with a leading company out of town. The feedback from the company was really positive; they asked him to come in again and to be prepared to give a presentation. This candidate invested a significant amount of time and effort, not to mention the expense of travel and accommodation for each interview, only to be told that although they would love to have him in their business, they didn’t have a role for him at that time. How very disappointing, not to mention frustrating!
Now, of course, employers are meeting with potential candidates all the time and it’s not always regarding imminent opportunities, but managing expectations is critical as well as just the right thing to do! This Company failed to do this and as such, due to his experience, the Engineering professional will never consider joining them, even in the future. He will go on and inevitably interview with their competitors and I’m sure he’ll be snapped up. I am also sure that he will undoubtedly share his unfortunate experience with his friends on social media and others…
More and more companies are experiencing Engineering, Manufacturing & Production talent literally abandoning their current scheduled interviews in favour of other opportunities, due to their feelings about a hiring process. I am sure you can appreciate the challenges this can cause you.
